Bridging Generations: The Power of History and Experience in Building a Resilient Society
Why collaboration between age groups is essential for a grounded, inclusive future, and how the older generation can lead by example.
The Power of History and Connection Across Generations
Introduction
In today’s rapidly changing world, we often find ourselves caught between the narratives of the past and the future. But one thing is clear: true progress comes from collaboration and mutual understanding. In this post, I explore the vital role that intergenerational cooperation plays in building a resilient society, and why the wisdom of the older generation is more relevant than ever.Interesting, but not surprising. We live in strange times filled with fear, which often makes us distant from each other. Truth is easily labeled as disinformation, and big lies are sold as truth. Facts seem to barely matter anymore – everything revolves around narratives. Imagine trying to navigate that, especially when you’re young. No wonder it’s a challenge, and it’s often the younger generation that withdraws from the conversation. I completely understand that. Much more is needed to secure our future. We have to do what we can to protect our freedom. That’s why things need to change, with a stronger and more realistic approach. Maybe we, as the older generation, need to take this matter into our own hands. After all, diversity is not about creating an “us versus them” narrative. Awareness should actually bring us closer together and help us build a society that embraces differences to enrich and unite us. Thanks, Ingrid Strümke, for putting this on the agenda!
I’m convinced that it’s only through cooperation between all age groups that we can build a resilient and healthy society. A society rooted in history and the lessons learned from it. Without that foundation, we risk drifting without direction. And I also believe it’s our mission and responsibility, as the older generation, to contribute. We bring lived history and the experience of navigating life’s ups and downs. We can remind people, share examples, present proven solutions, and, perhaps most importantly, demonstrate that even though life can be stormy, things usually work out in the end. Is it perhaps this lack of lived experience in resilience that leads so many young people to feel uncertain about the future? And to see aging as something less than positive?
In response to this idea, I’d say: You’re absolutely right about the importance of history and lived experiences in giving meaning to a society. In my experience, young people are indeed interested and open to advice, just as I was when I listened to my grandmother’s stories, which gave me a lot of wisdom. Young people are perfectly capable of developing their own vision of life. But first, they need to be freed from the rigid mindset instilled in them from a young age – not the most pleasant phrase, but that’s where the problem lies. I see it with startups, too: everything is materially driven, set up according to models, but the deeper meaning – the soul – is missing. It’s not easy to see things differently if you aren’t taught to look at the other side of the coin.
My commitment? Wisdom-sharing and meaningful connection. As we continue forward, these values can guide us to a more inclusive, resilient, and grounded society.
